FINALIST #1

Aimée McLeod

FROM The christchurch Art Show 2026

I have been working with clay for over 30 yrs. As well as throwing functional pots, I enjoy hand building sculptures in series that evolve over time.

These are coiled in a groggy clay, scraped to refine the shape, bisqued, glazed and then glaze fired mostly to 1300° in my gas kiln Though not interested in anatomical correctness, my sculptures represent Amazons (strong women) and birds. Sometimes I am combining them into powerful Bird Women.

Bird women are legendary hybrid creatures appearing in myths and folktales in many cultures. Often seen as portraying evil, contrasting stories however show her in protective roles or associate her with music and love My take on this is that the macho world feels threatened by mentally powerful women and therefore see them as ugly or evil.

For the last couple of years, they have represented amazons and birds. This year I am combining them into powerful hybrid Bird Women.

FINALIST #3

Svetlana Orinko

FROM The christchurch Art Show 2026

Svetlana Orinko is a Christchurch-based artist, originally from Ukraine, trained in the traditions of classical realism.

Her practice is grounded in the discipline and methods of the Old Masters, with a strong emphasis on observation, material understanding, and the emotional language of light. "Where Light Lingers" captures a fleeting moment in a hydrangea garden at dusk, where colour deepens and light dissolves into shadow. Through layered brushwork and carefully balanced values, the work seeks to create a sense of visual poetry—an atmosphere that invites stillness, intimacy, and reflection.

The interplay of cool blues, violets, and soft pinks evokes both abundance and fragility, while the dense composition draws the viewer into a contemplative space. Rather than simply describing the subject, the painting reflects an internal experience of time slowing and beauty existing in transition. This work, like all of Svetlana’s practice, is created entirely by hand using traditional painting methods.

FINALIST #4

Odelle morshuis

FROM The christchurch Art Show 2026

“Accumulation” considers the human figure as both a physical presence and a container for memory.

Clay is central to the work because it records touch so directly. Impressed into the surface are traces of other figures, held like residual marks of contact. These impressions act as echoes of past encounters: suggesting memory, relationship, and the way identity is shaped through proximity to others. Even in solitude, the figure is not singular or isolated, but formed through accumulation, imprint, and exchange.

The work also relies on the relationship between positive and negative space. Solid forms are balanced by voids, allowing absence to function as an active part of the composition. What is present is held against what is missing or implied. “Accumulation” reflects on embodiment, connection, and the subtle ways human experience is carried in the body.
