Aimée McLeod - CHRISTCHURCH Award winner
The CHRISTCHURCH Art Show 2026

I have been working with clay for over 30 yrs. As well as throwing functional pots, I enjoy hand building sculptures in series that evolve over time. These are coiled in a groggy clay, scraped to refine the shape, bisqued, glazed and then glaze fired mostly to 1300° in my gas kiln Though not interested in anatomical correctness, my sculptures represent Amazons (strong women) and birds. Sometimes I am combining them into powerful Bird Women.
Bird women are legendary hybrid creatures appearing in myths and folktales in many cultures. Often seen as portraying evil, contrasting stories however show her in protective roles or associate her with music and love My take on this is that the macho world feels threatened by mentally powerful women and therefore see them as ugly or evil.
For the last couple of years, they have represented amazons and birds. This year I am combining them into powerful hybrid Bird Women.

“Accumulation” considers the human figure as both a physical presence and a container for memory. Clay is central to the work because it records touch so directly.
Impressed into the surface are traces of other figures, held like residual marks of contact. These impressions act as echoes of past encounters: suggesting memory, relationship, and the way identity is shaped through proximity to others. Even in solitude, the figure is not singular or isolated, but formed through accumulation, imprint, and exchange.
The work also relies on the relationship between positive and negative space. Solid forms are balanced by voids, allowing absence to function as an active part of the composition. What is present is held against what is missing or implied. “Accumulation” reflects on embodiment, connection, and the subtle ways human experience is carried in the body.

Svetlana Orinko - Highly Commended
The CHRISTCHURCH Art Show 2026
Svetlana Orinko is a Christchurch-based artist, originally from Ukraine, trained in the traditions of classical realism. Her practice is grounded in the discipline and methods of the Old Masters, with a strong emphasis on observation, material understanding, and the emotional language of light. "Where Light Lingers" captures a fleeting moment in a hydrangea garden at dusk, where colour deepens and light dissolves into shadow. Through layered brushwork and carefully balanced values, the work seeks to create a sense of visual poetry—an atmosphere that invites stillness, intimacy, and reflection. The interplay of cool blues, violets, and soft pinks evokes both abundance and fragility, while the dense composition draws the viewer into a contemplative space. Rather than simply describing the subject, the painting reflects an internal experience of time slowing and beauty existing in transition. This work, like all of Svetlana’s practice, is created entirely by hand using traditional painting methods. No digital processes are used at any stage. In an increasingly hybrid visual culture, this commitment reflects a dedication to craftsmanship, authenticity, and the enduring value of painterly skill.

ALEX DiMercurio - WELLINGTON Award winner
The WELLINGTON Art Show 2026
I’m a Wellington-based artist focused on creating immersive, textural abstract cloud and seascapes. My work explores the emotional resonance of light, movement, and colour, capturing the dramatic energy of clouded skies and their reflections over water through bold palette knife strokes.
Each painting is composed with intention, where every mark and colour choice contributes to harmony, depth, and a contemplative visual experience. Using a range of tools and knives, I sculpt structure from ethereal, formless elements, allowing refracted light, soft hues, and bold texture to coexist in a delicate balance. Collectors often describe my paintings as having a levitating presence on the wall, offering shifting perspectives when viewed up close or from a distance. At the heart of my practice is an exploration of connection; to nature, to others, and to ourselves.
Having lived across continents and moved frequently, I’m attuned to how we seek belonging and stillness amid change. For me, the vast sky and ever-moving waters hold this duality. Ever-changing yet constant, offering a sense of familiarity and comfort regardless of distance or place. Through my work, I honour the beauty of the ephemeral. The quiet glow of a horizon and the weightlessness of standing beneath an immense sky invite pause, presence, and a deeper awareness of the shifting natural world around us, and the emotional cloudscapes we carry within. ‘Shine On’ explores a moment of transition, when turbulent weather begins to lift and light reasserts itself across sky and water. Layered cloud form’s part and dissolve, revealing a luminous band of sunset hovering at the edge of night. A space of release, relief, and quiet awe, it speaks to fleeting moments when uncertainty gives way to clarity, and when nature’s scale reminds us of both our fragility and our belonging.

luke greenfield - Highly Commended
The wellington Art Show 2026
Luke Greenfield is a self-taught painter based in the Wairarapa, New Zealand. His practice developed from earlier sculptural work in wood and is now centred on oil painting.
Animals are central to Luke’s work, reflecting a long-standing interest since childhood. His paintings often place animals in human settings, using familiar interiors to frame the subject. Luke favours oil paint, using a limited palette and a wet-on-wet painting technique. His approach is practical and focused, paying attention to form and composition.
The work entered for the ASAA Gold Award, titled Winston, shows a Great Dane seated on a couch in a quiet, private moment. The dog is at ease and appears unaware of being observed. The painting invites viewers to spend time with the scene and make their own interpretation.

antonia - Highly Commended
The wellington Art Show 2026
Antonia is a contemporary abstract artist, her work is a vibrant fusion of layers created with acrylic, ink, and pencils. Green Commute 2 blurs the boundary between nature’s instinct and human routine. At first glance, the forms suggest wild flowers. However, these same shapes begin to resemble a mass of commuters, bodies moving forward in quiet unison toward an implied destination. The work invites a slow shift in perception, where organic freedom and collective momentum occupy the same visual space, challenging the viewer to consider where nature ends and human systems begin.
