Highly Commended

Cathy Brickhill

While it is only the Regional Finalist that goes forward to compete with the other Regional Finalists for the ultimate Award, the HIGHLY COMMENDED artists will enjoy the motivational recognition they receive from the judges and the public amongst their peers at the Opening Night of the Christchurch Show at the wonderful Te Pae Event Centre on Friday 8th March.

Cathy Brickhill is one of two highly commended artists selected in the Christchurch regional award for The STUFF ART Aotearoa Gold Award. Cathy's textile work  "Large Mahoe Leaf Skeleton", stood out to the judges as a work worthy of highly commended status. Congratulations Cathy.

"I'm Cathy Jane, and I adore New Zealand's wildlife. My art is made entirely of sculpted thread, which is a delicate form of freehand machine embroidery and hand work. I build layers of tiny stitches into unique forms. I draw my inspiration from the canvas that is New Zealand with all of my work based from found objects and bird species endemic to our country. Taking the detailed reflections of our natural world and combining it with the ability to see the intricate detail and transferring those details into a stitched representation - gives my work its own uniqueness.  I hope my work opens the eye to intrigue and wonder, causing the viewer to look twice.  I don’t just sketch and stitch my work, my work evolves through experimentation. Trekking through New Zealand’s vast native forests, off-shore islands, mountain passes, and freediving amongst some of the world’s most beautiful marine reserves gives me endless ideas for my sculptural art."
