Gawie Bosman Sculpture
Gawie Bosman is an upcoming sculpture artist operating as “Gawie Bosman Sculpture.” Known to most as Gabriel, he decided to use his original Afrikaans name as an artist.
Moving from South Africa, he settled in the Leeston/Southbridge area nearly 10 years ago to work as a builder.
Without any training or education, Gawie started his art journey making Djembe (African drums) and his very popular ‘Steel tongue drums’ - xylophone type percussion instruments that he makes out of expired gas bottles.
He continued to exclusively use recycled materials mostly from the building industry including flashings, hot water cylinders, driftwood, oil drums, saddles, horseshoes, lamp shades and heaps more to create female busts, a motorbike and animals including fish, a crab and horses.
He started his exhibition journey at our local Lakeland Art Gallery and continued to exhibit at Darfield, Oxford and Ashburton galleries.
In 2023 he started attending art shows, receiving awards in the People’s Choice category at both the Selwyn and Cashmere Art Shows. He also recently won the Premier Award at the Ashburton 60th Annual Art Exhibition!
Gawie’s latest project is a full life size horse consisting of one half steel plate and the other half copper- truly spectacular! This will be on display at the Sculpture Festival at the Art Centre in Christchurch during October.
