The STUFF Art Aotearoa Gold Award is back for 2025. Entries have been received and the adjudication process has already begun! Headed by a duo more than up to the task, both judges are committed to discovering the next National Winner of the STUFF Art Aotearoa Gold Award for 2025. In the name of Art Excellence we introduce National Judge, Bob Kerr and welcome back Stuff judge, Frances Morton.
Bob Kerr is a painter, writer and illustrator from Wellington. His paintings are held in private and public collections including the Waikato Art museum, The Parliamentary collection and his next door neighbour. He works in a big white studio in Cuba St with a group of other illustrators, writers and gallerists. His paintings often look at New Zealand’s history and landscape. He enjoys working with historians. He has worked with Mark Derby on exhibitions about the Waihi miners strike and the police invasion of Mangapohatu, with David Grant on an exhibition about World War One and with Simon Nathan on a show about the geologist Harold Wellman. He has also written many award-winning children’s books and has twice been on the judging panel for the Children's Book Awards. His favourite painter is Australian artist, Fred Williams. When Fred was asked what does it take to be a painter? He replied, 300 paintings. In other words just do it.
“That’s the great thing about the Stuff Art Aotearoa Awards,’ says Bob, “they provide a place to do it."

Frances Morton is an award-winning journalist with more than 20 years’ experience including time as head of re: News, TVNZ’s youth digital platform and roles with VICE New Zealand, Metro and NZME titles. Now as Editor for publications that ‘celebrate, reflect and reveal the best things about life in Aotearoa’ Frances enjoys working with the ‘extraordinary team of writers, creatives and contributors to bring readers delight, discovery and new perspectives every weekend.’
Frances particular interest in the arts and the role they play in our culture and society has informed her approach and appreciation of the visual arts and of the adjudication process involved with the Art Aotearoa Gold Award.

Throughout the year Frances and Bob will select from each of our nation-wide art shows, a regional finalist and three highly commended artists. The first announcement will take place this time next week! In our vibrant Capital City, The Wellington Art Show returns to Tākina. We are excited to be back in our hometown from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March celebrating Art For Everyone. The first regional finalist and three highly commended artists will be announced during our VIP Preview.
This year the public gets to have their say too, with the help of our award sponsor Stuff Media. Stuff will use an innovative interactive voting platform to maximise public awareness. This is an exceptional opportunity for those artists who are entering the award for 2025 to gain nationwide exposure. Though judges have the ultimate say, public voting will influence the judging outcome.
Our judge duo has already whittled entries for the Wellington region down to four. View the artworks and vote for your favourite Gold Award entry here via STUFF:
